Stratification of Parkinson's disease patients from the Fox Insight study
Anita Valmarska
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting people worldwide. PD patients experience a range of motor and non-motor symptoms; their heterogeneity points to the existence of patient subtypes with similar symptoms and disease progression. We address the existence of PD subtypes based on data from the Fox Insight study. For that purpose, we apply iterative backward search feature selection with clustering and supervised machine learning to longitudinal patients' data. The results reveal four groups of patients with similar symptoms and trajectories of disease progression: younger patients with more severe pain, older patients with mild pain symptoms, and two groups of patients with moderate pain. We analyze the differences in symptoms’ severity and medications treatment and show a visual presentation of the differences in disease progression between patients from different groups.
